Certified Medical Assistant Has Increased Employment Prospects

Certified Medical Assistant

A medical assistant is a person who assists doctors and physicians in their day to day duties, acting as their deputies in cases of emergency. With the continuous growth in the medical field over the past two centuries, doctors have always held a place of high respect and dignity in the society, and consequently, medical assistants have also found their own place in the society. Medical Assistance has become a profession instead of a part time job with the attractive salary and perks it provides. A medical assistant has to be almost as skilled as the doctor himself, with his day to day chores matching that of the doctors and surgeons and in some cases, even more. The medical assistant has to be properly skilled in his field, since he is dealing with the lives of patients. This is where a certified medical assistant will find a better and a deserving position compared to a non certified one.

The medical certification is a process where the medical assistant is recognized as a certified medical assistant. It means that he is well versed in the medical terminologies and practices involved. Although it is informal and not compulsory for a medical assistant to undertake this examination, having the certificate greatly boosts his prospective career options. A certified medical assistant is preferred over an uncertified one. The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) recommends the certification to all budding medical assistants. This certification is generally achieved by writing an exam conducted by the National Board of Medical Examiners and AMA. It is conducted three times a year, in January, June and October. Examinees can take the test at over 200 exam venues scattered all over the United States. Once a participant completes the exam and successfully clears it, he is recognized as a certified medical assistant, or a CMA. The CMA is a credential that a medical assistant gets once he completes the exam. Alternately, he can choose another credential, the registered medical assistant, or the RMA. This is yet another credential like the CMA. The American Technologists Agency (AMT) takes care of the registration of all the medical assistants in this certification.

The advantages of being a certified medical assistant are great. Being certified increases the employment prospects of a medical assistant. The medical certification exams are designed in such a way that they test the knowledge and skills in an objective manner. This enables the medical assistants to be highly competitive, with greater potential and gives them better job satisfaction. The advantage of having a certification is that it acts as a document that authenticates that the medical assistant is genuine. The reason for having this certificate is that today's market is highly selective and competitive. If there are two participants competing for a job, one certified and the other not certified, the certified person is more likely to get the job rather than the uncertified one. Moreover, since the medical profession is a very dangerous one, in which mistakes can cost lives, certification of skill is all the more important. In the above regard, a certified medical assistant will find himself a good place in the society.
