A clinical research assistant job is one of the diversifications of the wider genre of professions that are collectively known as medical assistants. Clinical Research assistants are people who are restricted to the research and development (R&D) department of any medical foundation or hospital. Their jobs may include finding new technologies in the medical field, but in most cases, they are expected to act as subordinates to higher doctors, assisting them in their laboratory work. These trials are required to ascertain the efficacy of the medicine on patients when compared to healthy people. Clinical Research assistants make note of any deviations in the effects of the medicine and report them to the research scientists, enabling them to perfect the medicine.

Clinical Research Assistants prepare documents called 'protocols' that describe the process of the trials in detail. These documents must contain all the information regarding the test, including the specifications and components of the medicine, the conditions under which the test is performed, the health condition of the test subject, the age of the subject, and other relevant information. During the test, clinical research associates take down notes and make necessary modifications to the protocol document based on the test proceedings.

Clinical Research Assistants need background knowledge to pursue this profession as a career option. Generally, participants with a science background are preferred. The person needs to have a degree in the relevant area like human biology or any related subject. In addition, soft skills like management skills, confidence, dedication and commitment are required for this job. The ability to motivate and to be motivated is an added advantage to any prospective clinical research assistants. They should also be prepared to work independently incase they are assigned a task by their superior.

Clinical Research Assistants start out as small professionals in their limited scope of work but can make it big given sufficient time and chance. With experience, a clinical research assistant can sometimes earn more than a doctor or a surgeon does. The responsibilities given to a clinical research assistant depends upon his experience. A beginner may be assigned to prepare a test case under the supervision of a trainer, then he may progress to creating a test case on his own, proceed to managing a trial on his own and further enhance his position by managing several trials in different countries simultaneously. He may then opt to assist in scientific research or choose a more practical path by obtaining a certificate in Clinical Research.
