As the title suggests, having a medical assistant career is definitely not an easy task. Even though the job may seem simple at the outset, it is a very vital cog in the overall machinery that constitutes medical science. So what kind of work do medical assistant careers offer? A common misconception is that it is a career marked by only menial and clerical jobs. In fact, if a person shows a flair for the job, then it can be quite rewarding. The services that a medical assistant can give can be broadly divided into two categories namely administrative and clinical.

Administrative

One of the most important jobs of a medical assistant is to make sure that the office of the health practitioner is running smoothly. Most of these jobs can be bought together into the administrative aspect of a medical assistant career. The administrative duties of the medical assistant depend on a variety of factors. Some of these factors include the size of the hospital or clinic and the location. For example, in a small facility, the medical assistant may report directly to the practitioner, whereas in a large medical enterprise, the medical assistant must follow the chain of command that governs the hospital. Another important factor is the specialty of the practitioner. Some of the administrative duties that are part and parcel of a medical assistant career include answering calls, greeting patients, general accounting, updating and filing patients' medical records, filling out insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services, and handling billing and bookkeeping. Cleaning is also a major job, and this involves the whole premises and even the equipments.

Clinical

While administrative duties cater more to the administration, another facet of the medical assistant career caters more to patients and their health. This is the clinical facet. Such a medical assistant comes increasingly in handy when there are a large number of patients and it is impossible for the practitioner to see all of them simultaneously. Some clinical duties include recording medical histories and the sort. Many others involve a direct interaction with the patient. Such duties include recording vital signs, explaining medical procedures, preparing patients and the like. Another subset of the clinical aspect involves laboratory work. Some examples of such duties include performing laboratory tests, sterilizing the instruments and more of the sort. Under the tutelage of a practitioner, the medical assistant can also prescribe medicine, change dressings, and administer injections, refill drugs and much more in the same way.

Medical assistant careers involve working in many different conditions. It also involves interaction with a variety of people. This includes doctors, patients, colleagues, cleaners, wardens and a lot more. Though it can be done on either a part time or on a full time basis, the responsibility always remains high. A career that is indeed dynamic.
