Firstly, to be eligible for a course in medical assistantship one needs to have a basic knowledge of subjects like biology, housekeeping, mathematics, computer and typing skills and health education. Other skills like office keeping, office procedures and office terminology are also necessary as supplementary skills. Courses for medical assistant degrees mainly stress on subjects like General psychology, English as a medium of communication, Human anatomy, Mathematics, Basic Pharmacology, Medical Practice and Legal aspects of Medicine. Followed by this, if a person satisfies all aspects of the program he/she has to undergo extra seminars and lessons of history and other aspects of medical practices like testing practices, aseptic techniques and operation room practices.

Various committees have been set up in various countries to regulate the graduation of students as medical assistants. These committees also provide license to work in the medical field and set standards for conduct and payment to professional medical assistants. According to these committees the standard pay for medical assistants in a well established organisation is more than 30,000$.
