With the growing importance of the medical field in today's society and the increasing awareness among the general public about their health has caused a number of drastic changes in the medical profession. Hospitals are no longer restricted to being stationary; we now have mobile hospitals and treatment-on-call hospitals. Doctors no longer have their own small clinics. Instead, they are a part of a larger health care organization, mostly multinational hospitals which specialize in all departments, to give people all the services required at one place. With all these developments in the medical field, yet another new concept that has sprung up is the prospect of travel nursing. The idea of travel nursing came up mostly as a case of supply and demand. In some cases, when nurses of certain hospitals were unavailable for service, the hospitals were, in a way, handicapped. This situation led to the formation of travel nursing agencies, which recruit special nurses, who are asked to fill up these positions. So, typically, a travel nursing job would be to fill up the vacancy of the hospital until the hospital got back its nurse. In most cases, the agency provides these nurses with the boarding and food expenses, in addition to a princely salary. Travel nurses usually get much more than their regular counterparts owing to the unnatural style of the profession.
Travel Nursing is fast becoming an attractive profession, due to its high salary and perks. Regular nurses who are willing to the unusual timings and style of work are switching to travel nursing. The nature of the work is very unusual compared to regular nursing. Travel nursing jobs require varying periods of employment depending on the agency and the employer. It can be anywhere from 8 weeks to 26 weeks. Generally, it's between 8 weeks to 13 weeks, but upon the consent of both parties, the duration can be extended up to 26 weeks. In some cases, the travel nurse may like the place she is working and may desire to stay there as a permanent nurse. Most travel nursing agencies allow this, making proper arrangements for the nurse to become a permanent employee in the health care agency by discussing it with the employer. Travel nursing also allows another benefit. Friends with the required skill set can request the agency t post them in the same place, and it would be seriously taken into consideration. This way, in some cases, husband and wife can work together in the same hospital, so that their personal life need not be affected. The travel agency also arranges the housing for the nurse, in most cases, assisting the nurse in finding a home of her choice. Some agencies provide a furnished house themselves. The salary of a travel nurse varies depending on the geography of the location and other usual factors such as experience, area of expertise, etc. To work as a travel nurse, the person needs to have a license stating that she is allowed to work in that particular state/province. This is usually easy to obtain, and in some cases, the agency will take care of it. All in all, travel nursing is an attractive profession with a lot of advantages to it.
